What Is It We Do?

We build tools that help communities organize, access and apply local resources to the issues that most concern them.

For example:
  • SafeNight provides a way for domestic violence service organizations to crowdsource funding for hotel rooms when people are urgently in need.
  • Project Cookstove identifies meal programs and makes it very easy for people to find the nearest -- in both time and location -- free meal.

How Do We Do This?

  1. Generate: Convene people working in a particular issue area.
  2. Design: Work with the community and technologists to draft solutions.
  3. Select: Encourage the community to vote for the right tool for them.
  4. Build: Work with defined groups to build a tool.
  5. Use: Publish the tool for everyone to access.

In the nooks and crannies is the residue, the bits we leave behind and the things we carry. We're learning and sharing all of it.

We Believe

We believe that communities can effectively use technology to address some of their most intractable issues and problems. We have a theory of community technology intervention and we're working on an overall design that, we hope, will prove useful to more than just us.

If we're successful, we'll make pieces of technology, in broad collaboration, that can be adopted and used to make change.

Events

We bring people together, we attend other events, and, generally, speaking, we work hard to make meaningful connections across groups. Here are some of the places you can find us.
